Things to consider before adopting a pet
- Research breeds and their primary characteristics.
- Even mixed breed pets will have characteristics of their primary breeds.
- Consider your lifestyle and activity level.
- Working breed may not be suitable for a family that is not willing to spend time playing, training, and being active with their new pet.
- Avoid choosing a pet based solely on aesthetics, popularity, or size.
- Many “designer” breeds end up in shelters because they were chosen only on looks/popularity.
- Be sure you and your family are ready to commit to a new pet.
- Pets are a big responsibility and a long term commitment.
- There are costs to consider beyond dog food, such as yearly vaccinations, flea/tick prevention, heartworm testing and prevention, grooming, boarding or day care, and unexpected Vet bills.
- When you decide it’s time to adopt, be sure to give your new pet time to adjust to their new environment by following the “3-3-3 Rule”
